Moving to Berlin was an escape, a privileged one. It was an escape from the structural violence in South Africa, a violence that exists in Europe too but here, Lerato says, it’s easier to disengage. Her work is far from disengaged. It’s a tireless combat against historical erasure, complicating a white supremacist narrative by adding that of a black woman.
